The Root ::: I am grounded & connected

Plant roots connecting with the Earth
Roots connect plants to the Earth while forming intricate relationships with the living world around them. This reflection explores roots, interdependence, nourishment, grounding and our relationship with the Earth

Roots, Connection & Interdependence

The root represents connection to the inner world. It is first principle medicine; I am. Do you even know what you are? The roots do. They are positioned deep in the Earth, bringing stability and balance.

The root is where we begin to understand our relationship with the Earth. Hidden beneath the surface, roots anchor, nourish and connect. They create a foundation from which the plant can grow, reaching upwards while remaining deeply connected below.

Roots are not simply isolated structures. They exist within an intricate web of relationships with the living world around them. Fungal hyphae extend through the soil, connecting with roots and creating pathways through which plants and fungi interact. Bacteria and other microorganisms also live alongside the roots, contributing to a complex and interconnected ecosystem.

The plant is never truly separate from its environment. It is part of the soil, the water, the fungi, the bacteria, the minerals and all of the living relationships surrounding it. This is interdependence.

The Intelligence of Plant Roots

There is something fascinating about what happens beneath the surface.

Charles Darwin was deeply interested in the behaviour and growth of roots, particularly the way the root tip responds to its environment. The root system explores the soil, responds to changes around it and continually adapts as it grows.

Roots can sense and respond to factors within their environment, including moisture, nutrients, gravity and obstacles. Their growth is not simply random. There is a continual relationship between the root and the world it is moving through.

When we look at a root system, we can begin to see a different kind of intelligence. It is not necessarily intelligence in the human sense, but an extraordinary capacity to sense, respond, communicate and adapt.

The root is constantly in relationship.

It is listening to the Earth.

It is responding to its surroundings.

It is finding nourishment.

It is creating connection.

And perhaps there is something here for us to remember about ourselves.

Earth, Nourishment & the Body

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Earth element is associated with nourishment, digestion, stability and the centre of the body.

The Earth element relates to the middle jiao and to the digestive organs, including the stomach, spleen and pancreas. It is concerned with our ability to receive nourishment, transform it and distribute it throughout the body.

There is a beautiful relationship between this idea and the way a plant’s roots interact with the Earth.

The root receives nourishment from below.

It anchors the plant.

It transforms what is available within the soil into what the plant needs to grow.

Our own relationship with nourishment can also bring us back to the Earth. What are we taking in? What are we able to digest? What are we able to transform? What gives us the strength and stability to continue growing?

The roots remind us that nourishment begins with connection.

The Wisdom of Earth

The Earth is the foundation.

In the I-Ching, Earth carries the qualities of receptivity, grounding and allowing. It reminds us that not everything needs to be forced into being.

There is wisdom in receiving.

There is wisdom in being grounded.

There is wisdom in allowing ourselves to be supported by something larger than ourselves.

The roots don’t need to see the whole picture. They simply continue to grow, connect and respond to what is immediately around them.

Perhaps being grounded doesn’t mean standing still.

Perhaps it means being connected enough to respond.

The root teaches us about our inner world, our foundations and our relationship with the Earth. It reminds us that beneath everything we see above the surface is a vast and living network of connection.
